This year saw the 26th anniversary of the Isle of Mull Half Marathon and 10k races sponsored by Salen Hotel.
149 runners took part in the Half Marathon, 100 in the 10k and 17 in the children’s races. The weather conditions for the race were about as wet as it could have possibly have been, although fortunately, there was little wind to disrupt things further. The heavy, wet conditions meant that Robert Gilroy just couldn’t quite make the course record, even though his fitness was as high as it had ever been. Other runners did their best times ever on this event, as heat or head winds didn’t get in the way.
The Isle of Mull Pipe band both started and finished the race and all seemed to be well (weather excepted) until we realized that an off island bus driver carried on beyond the start of the Half Marathon point with his runners, and even with strong protests from the regular runners he refused to drop them off. This event not only annoyed the runners, but meant that a second start by the runners themselves had to be made. Fortunately, one of the regular and experienced runners set the second group away using his own watch, meaning that an adjustment could be made at the end. As we have a manual recording system, we had to do our best within a very tight time schedule. Even two days later, runners were asking for adjustments to their timings. Not a good situation and one we all regret sincerely. Changes to our structures have to be made if we are to allow so many extra entries.
