Sunday 9th August 2015
Today saw the 27th year of the Mull Half Marathon and it was certainly one of the best ones yet, even though the weather wasn’t perfect. Compared to last year though it was clement and the buses all behaved themselves perfectly, thanks to the return of Adrian Fitness as co-ordinator. Last year we had a ‘less experienced’ driver on one of the buses that wouldn’t let the Half Marathon runners off the bus at their allocated place. Fortunately, partly due to a mini revolution and Scott Kennedy’s organisation, the race was saved.
This year everything went to plan. People entered and paid online. The races filled early. The course was modified to make it more spectator friendly and was re-measured. The timing chips all worked and the results were efficiently compiled thanks to Mark Young from MYEventTiming. Just about everyone arrived home without injury. It wasn’t too hot or too cold or wet. A really good party atmosphere, enhanced by the 3 very fine young pipers from The Isle of Mull Pipe Band. A new course record set by Robert Gilroy from Ronhill Cambuslang Harriers.
This event only takes place after many volunteers have put in a lot of time at meetings, training and doing difficult jobs like ‘risk management’. On the day, local people and very helpful visitors man water stops, marshalling and first aid cover. Finally, this event is quite expensive to run and required sponsors like the Salen Hotel, Craignure Inn, West coast Motors, Mull Eagle Watch, Scottish Water and Argyll and Bute Council.
124 Runners took part in the Half Marathon, 65 in the 10K and 42 in the Junior races.
Finally, thanks to Ronnie Campbell MBE for comparing and his witty comments to finishing runners.
We very much look forward to seeing everyone again next year.
